Experiment and extension of Hyunseok Choi

HyeRyeong Cho

Hyunseok Choi is an artist who bases his art on traditional art and seeks other possibilities of modern art. He inputs reality in such works of old documents, maps, genre painting, folk painting, and ink painting of unknown authors. His workpieces are initiated from inspirations of documentary paintings based on oriental paintings. Documentary painting is a drawing to preserve special incidents or truths over long period of time. Documentary paintings of Choi is harmonized with artistic values added on to realistic aspect of historical records. He has created a huge amount of art piece regarding historical incidents or social phenomenon. Recently, Choi is making experimental attempts to extend his scope of art.

Looking into the characteristics of his recent work.

He is into expressing subjects which could be encountered in daily life with his interest in historical incident and social phenomenon above all. Although the expression of his painting follows the style and structure of Chosun dynasty’s documentary painting, Choi systematically arranged the subject inside the limited space with his remarkable observation and depicting capabilities.

Paintings of ‘Sewol Ferry, Shiny exterior with empty interior’ (2014), ‘circulation foot-and-mouth disease’ (2011) treated social issues by reproducing the realities which we faced at the time. He tackles how we look at the incident, and poses various issues. Subjects of current events are handled in a humorous fashion rather than direct depiction. His paintings show characteristics of cartoons about social affairs for surpassing limits with sarcastic depiction instead of dramatically depicting scenes with the priority of importance like the historical paintings.

‘relig distribution’ (2017) portrays the architectures of religions in Seoul such as Mosque, Catholic Church, Christian Church, temples. The painting captured the large space in to the canvas just like the old map paintings when modern projection technique was not yet developed. Critical point of views are implicitly included in the painting to criticize the era of lost religious values which is contradicting the commonly seen religious buildings in modern Korea.

‘Open Port Area Cat Culture Ecological Map’ (2018) is a painting of Choi’s surroundings while he was working as a residence at the Incheon Art Platform during 2016-2017. He traced the tracks of old harbors and depicted the reminiscence of the locations which he took a sight on. It is also his personal documentary painting as he painted his memory of observing his surroundings during his 1-year residency.

‘The mind rain of creative space’ (2012) and ‘Behind the stage’ (2016) are paintings which records the situation of the author himself. It has a complex composition with series of pictures, but each scene clearly depicts a comprehendible situation.

The people who appear in ‘Behind the stage’ (2016) do not have facial features, not externally expressing emotions, feelings, and mentality. De-individualization of the crowd and anonymity were portrayed. Special materials were used in this unique art piece having characters jumbled up and liberate expression when heat is imposed on the painting.

Let’s explore his recent art pieces.

Choi proactively mixes in experimental materials into traditional oriental painting materials. Special pigments, which change along with temperature, are mixed in traditional ink, and implemented hair dryers to attempt new expression methods.

The following characteristics were noticed in the drawings of the four gracious plants which were exhibited at the Cheongju museum of art this year. He first reproduced the traditional drawings of the four gracious plants then produced various changes according to audience participation, images of the plants disappearing like mirage when heat is applied. The new art piece is completed when connected to the audience. Choi explains his work saying, “Nature is dead the moment it is attempted to be possessed, disappears if human attempts to possess, revives form far away, and vanishes if it tempted”. This piece contains demeanor towards nature, depicts the traditional custom represented by the four gracious plants, and criticizes elitism.

If carefully observed, workpiecesdepicting the four gracious plants - ‘mirage_the four gracious plants

’ (2018) and ‘Mirage_ japanese apricot flower / orchid/ chrysanthemum/ bamboo’ (2017) are placed facing each other a distant space at the exhibition. On the side walls, workpieces of bamboo and orchid, ‘Mirage_bamboo forest’ (2018) and ‘Mirage_scuffle’(2018) are facing each other as well.

The exhibition was designed in a flow which leads the audience from a plant to the bamboo forest, then to another plant, but the scope of the works break bounds and extend to the entire space, moreover, composed the overall design to have a picture become a material of another workpiece. The exhibited works in form of traditional oriental paintings, and particularly, the bamboo and orchid are drawn repeatedly with original technique, light and shade, along the long 20 meter wall. There is a hair dryer in front of each workpiece which triggers suspicion

The audience first appreciates the work then carefully approach the hair dryer with curiosity. Eventually, everyone actively participates without distinction in age or gender. Hair dryers are held, then the audiences face a whole new experience while watching the picture change and disappear. Such ‘change’ could be experienced from his work at the exhibition, but it is all up to the audience choosing how long they will stay in that area. As those are more closely approached, the more the intent and meaning of the author’s workpieces become one.

Choi pays attention to the exhibiting style and major consumers, and considers various angles in approaching and applying change on his work method. When evaluation of general consumers, who are not promoters nor collectors, are induced, even more personal values are given while experiencing the workpieces rather than inconvenience in perspective of the audiences. Choi produced his work more like a designer than a creator. His attempts on his art during the past 10 years did not settle on a safe appraisal. His works are the result of consistently researching and experimenting to close the gap of traditional and modern art.

Choi strives within the frame, creation, and freshness of secularization in the genre of modern day art and previse with a stance of firmly refusing stability and patterning in his work. He simultaneously planned projects which matches his personal interest and which he felt joy in many moments. He maintains experiments for preservation and stability of his recent workpiece materials, then applied all of his new environment, interest to the local area, and current situation as subjects of his art. Although the foundation is based on traditional art, there is no doubt that the new experimental creations of Choi and his artistic outlook are those to look forward every time.
